Core Reasons Why Your Car Heater Isn’t Working
As with most vehicle systems, there are several possibilities and moving parts that may be causing the outage. Here are some of the common culprits.
Issues with the Coolant System
Low coolant may be the culprit of your heating issues if there isn’t enough fluid to travel to the heater core. Low coolant levels causes more than just HVAC problems. Left unchecked, it could causes engine damage.
Temperature Control Problems
When you turn on the heat and move the dial to the warm setting, a fuse that supports your heating and cooling system kicks in to get warm air flowing. A blown fuse can prevent the system from starting correctly and may need to be replaced to resolve temperature control issues.
Heater Core
If you notice a fog or sweet smell inside the cabin, it may be issues with the heater core, fan, or a leak in the system that are causing your car heater to malfunction. That’s why simply adding coolant may not fix your car heater, even if the problem is within the coolant system.
Malfunctioning Thermostat Valves
Your vehicle's thermostat valves open and close to control the coolant flow to your heater core. Coolant can't reach the heater core to warm your car if a blockage forces the valve to remain closed. If your thermostat is stuck open, the temperature in your vehicle's engine will drop and trigger the check engine light.
Broken Blend Door Actuator
A blend door actuator is a small electric motor that controls your car's heating and cooling system. Actuators are located behind the vents, and if broken, can cause inconsistent airflow, knocking, incorrect temperature readout, and a lack of heat.If you notice any of these telling signs, it's time to have your car heating system looked at by a professional.
